Istanbul Travel Guide for Nigerians — What You Need to Know

Istanbul Travel Guide for Nigerian Visitors

Istanbul is the number one destination for Nigerian travelers in Turkiye. Here is everything you need to know before your visit.

Safety

Istanbul is generally very safe for tourists. Turkiye has a strong police presence in tourist areas. Normal travel precautions apply — watch your belongings in crowded areas like the Grand Bazaar.

Weather

Best time to visit: April-June and September-November. Summers (July-August) can be hot. Winters are cold but less crowded.

Getting Around

Istanbul has an excellent public transport system — metro, tram, ferry, and bus. Get an Istanbulkart for easy payment. Taxis are affordable but use the meter.

Food

Turkish cuisine is halal-friendly. Must-try: kebabs, baklava, Turkish breakfast, pide, lahmacun, and Turkish tea/coffee. Street food is safe and delicious.

Shopping

Grand Bazaar (4,000+ shops), Spice Bazaar, Istiklal Street, and modern malls like Zorlu Center. Bargaining is expected in bazaars.

Islamic Heritage

Istanbul has incredible mosques — Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Suleymaniye. Prayer facilities are everywhere. The city is very respectful of Islamic practices.

Money

Currency: Turkish Lira (TRY). USD and EUR are widely accepted in tourist areas. ATMs everywhere. Credit cards accepted in most places.
